The number of inhabitants also continued to increase. Thanks to the cultural and artistic leanings of the Vasa dynasty the royal court in Warsaw became an important arts and science centre. The same could be said of the theatre with the famous theatre of Władysław IV Vasa leading the field. The wars of the mid-17th century brought about an economic collapse of Warsaw.
